update on the drapes

with 6 comments

My ebay (Ikea Jorun Lov/Luv) drapes arrived. I put two sets (one pair in the center and a panel on each side of the wall). They are nice wide panels, so I’m debating slicing them down the middle to even it all out. The more I think about it, the more I like that idea. For now, they are hung and I like the look and they keep the living/dining areas so cool.

too much of a good thing

I love me some sunshine but there is a limit. I decided it was time to cover up those windows. I knew I wanted black drapes to balance out the entryway marble tile and the dark leather sofa, but simple black was boring and stripes competed with the dining room light fixture. When I saw this modern leaf pattern at Ikea, I knew it was the one. On sale too! The bad news is that I need to find two more sets to complete the room and these were on sale because they are discontinued. Fingers crossed I find them!

***Good news update. Found 2 sets on ebay for $60/set inc. shipping. Not $39 like in the store, but I’ll take ’em!***

option one

When Husband and I were first married (has it really been 10 years?!), the house we lived in had a HUGE bird of paradise plant (at least 5 feet tall) along the driveway. When I saw the craigslisting for this mirror, I did not hesitate. The fact that it was $20 and located just 5 minutes away didn’t hurt either. Not sure if it will remain in the dining area, but I’m giving the look a test drive.

about the dining room wall.

what do on the dining room wall?
what do on the dining room wall?

The windows will be getting some sort of wooden rolling shade style treatment soon. I’m ordering these (or some very similar) for the playroom to try out the look and quality.

DIY Chalkboard

diy chalkboard
comfort + chalkboard
What you need:

* precut MDF sheet. Bought mine at Home Depot for about $4.
* Chalkboard Spray paint
* any primer. You can do a primer spray paint and it is super easy. I did a magnetic primer (not spray) and wish I didn’t. It is clumpy and gave my otherwise smooth MDF a bumpy texture. I don’t mind it so much, makes it more earthy/organic looking, but I’d skip it if I was doing it again.
* sidewalk chalk. easier to handle and comes in fun shapes.

dining room

Fixture was installed (Thank you, Bakari) on my birthday. Parents and Son were drawn to it almost immediately. Between the time it arrived and was hung, I had a few moments of insecurity, but now that it’s up there, I’m feeling good about it.

As for the dining room decor, our original table is staying and I’m 99% certain about going with a mix+match approach to the chairs. Nothing else has been decided. I don’t even have any inspiration photos to share just yet.

More lighting photos coming soon! Next week, Bakari will be back to hang the playroom fixture, guest room chandelier, Daughter’s chandelier and a wall sconce in the master bedroom. Light is a very very good thing. Hooray for light!
